In London, a young Russian girl escapes from two men, and the Tomorrow People’s Lab is attacked - masked people break in and use radiation to prevent John, Elizabeth and Mike from escaping. Elizabeth awakens and meets Major Turner of the SIS, a specialist British group, who wants to know the location of the Russian girl - Pavla Vlasiva, a telepath working for the KGB. After Major Turner reads Elizabeth's mind, and discovers she has no knowledge of Pavla, she revives John and Mike, and tells them that Pavla has been reading the minds of the delegates at a NATO conference. The SIS want to capture Pavla so that they can erase her memory - or, if necessary, to kill her. John, Elizabeth and Mike begin looking for Pavla, whom Mike finds at a disco. But the girl sees some KGB agents, and flees, and the KGB agents threaten to kill Mike unless Pavla comes out of hiding. Pavla hears them leaves her hiding place, but Mike warns her off, and she jaunts to a radio station to try to contact her parents. However, the radio producer tips off the KGB, and when they arrive, Pavla telepathically contacts Mike, who jaunts in, only to be knocked out and captured. Later, John and Elizabeth jaunt to the studio and meet Major Turner, who tells them what happened. Mike regains consciousness and jaunts back to the Lab, and John and Elizabeth help him to contact Pavla. She is being held at the Russian Embassy; John and Mike jaunt there to rescue her, but she refuses to go. A KGB agent leaves with Pavla in a car, but they are followed by Major Turner, and a car chase ensues, finally ending with the KGB car crashing. Pavla is taken away in an ambulance commandeered by and taken to an SIS building. Having found where she is being held, John, Elizabeth and Mike jaunt to Pavla's room, where Major Turner is using a machine to extract all the information from her mind. John and Elizabeth leave to get help, while Mike jaunts to the Russian Embassy and tells the KGB General that the SIS have Pavla. John and Elizabeth manage to stop the brain-drain, and Mike jaunts to Pavla's room to tell them what he has done. Major Turner urgently warns them all to leave - every important KGB agent has a small explosive device surgically implanted in them which can be remotely detonated. Mike goes back in the room to try to help Pavla, but she throws herself through the window just as the device is triggered, killing her in the explosion.
